Computer Chess (2013)
Director: Andrew Bujalski
IMDB Rating: 6.5 (12/28/13)
My Rating: 8 Moves to Checkmate (Out of 10)
If this Film had a Sibling: Clerks (but instead of Hockey they play Chess)
Pros: Interesting Character Interactions, Blast from the Past Camera work, the Feel of the Film
Cons: Not for everyone
Have you ever asked yourself "What happened to the main character from Dazed and Confused, the one with the long hair that looked like a girl?" Well, that's him in the above picture from Computer Chess. Apparently he didn't become cool. Or did he?
Computer Chess is a 'special' film about the early days of AI. I felt like I knew the characters the minute I was introduced to them (No, that's not because I'm a computer chess guru). The characters, their conversations and interactions were unique.
The film also nails the feeling of the 1980s. After I finished watching this film, the need to get this on V/H/S overcame me. This film is definitely not for everyone (including Roger Ebert who's review for this film popped up after his death as one of his last). But at the same time I would recommend this film to anyone who loves movies.
