Spring Breakers (2013)
Director: Harmony Korine
IMDB Rating: 5.4 (12/28/13)
My Rating: 9/10
Pros: Colors, Beautifully Shot, Vibrant Music, Epic Monologue
Cons: Style Over Substance, Over-the-Top
I feel like I am a Korine hater-stalker. I follow him at every directional turn he makes, ready to point out his faults. Then came Spring Breakers. I proclaim this film one of the greatest 'Trojan Horse films of all time. I can only imagine all the people who saw this film with no idea who Harmony Korine is. "OMG I love Selena Gomez", "I hope this is another Project X".......Nope.
I get a lot of hate for it, but this is one of my favorite films of 2013. I would go so far as saying it does a great job of encapsulating 2013. The film is highly stylized and has one of THE best performances by James Franco as Alien (or Al but truth be told he's not from this planet y'all). If I were a college lad, I'd take down my Scarface poster and replace it with Alien.
The colors, the music, all draw you into this spectacle for the eyes. But unlike popular belief this film does have commentary to say. Or does it? Honestly I don't care. It is entertaining unless ofcourse you are a Disney mouth-breather or you want to honestly see a good film about Spring Break.
Remember Spring Break isn't just a vacation, its life.
